La Brisa, which translates as “The Breeze”, sits on almost 7 acres of beautiful bay-front property originally owned by author, Kirk Munroe. The Spanish Colonial house was built by famous architect Richard Keihnel of Keihnel & Elliott as the Florida home of Pittsburgh attorney John Sempa and his wife Elenore.
Constructed from 1926 to 1928, the 16,500 square foot house has 7 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms overlooking Biscayne Bay. The gated entrance is located on Main Highway just at the edge of the Coconut Grove commercial district.
La Brisa’s second owner was heir to the Marshall Field’s Department Store chain, Minna Field Burnaby. It was then inherited by her son, anthropologist Henry Field, and his wife Julia Field, who was a lion tamer and one of the founders of the Crandon Park Zoo. La Brisa remained in the Field family until 1986. Rumour has it that Howard Hughes lived at La Brisa for a while, too. La Brisa most recently changed hands in 2008 when it sold for $11,500,000.
