International Rock Flipping Day

Pond at Bayfront Park, Downtown Miami

Did you know that the second Sunday in September is International Rock Flipping Day?

What began as an off-hand comment by Fred Garber on Dave Bonta’s blog Via Negativa, the first International Rock Flipping Day was organized by Dave Bonta and Bev Wigney in September 2007, and has been hosted by various bloggers ever since. International Rock Flipping Day is, at its heart, a day to go out and explore our natural world… even in the middle of downtown Miami.

How to participate in IRFD:

  • On or about September 14th, 2014, find a rock or rocks and flip it/them over.
  • Record what you find: “Any and all forms of documentation are welcome: still photos, video, sketches, prose, or poetry.”
  • Replace the rock as you found it; it’s someone’s home.
  • Post what you find online, load your photos to the IRFD Flickr group, or comment on the International Rock Flipping Day FaceBook page. The Twitter hashtag is #rockflip.
  • Have Fun.
