The Challenger Memorial sculpture by Isamu Noguchi was dedicated on January 28, 1988 in Bayfront Park to pay tribute to the seven astronauts killed on the Challenger space shuttle: Jarvis, McAuliffe, McNair, Onizuka, Resnik, Scobee, & Smith. The 100-foot tall abstract white steel sculpture is a spiraling double helix symbolizing the path of the Challenger as it rose on its final flight.
